A touareg electric guitar riff opens up a desert in massive, dry tones. "Hey everybody, it's DJ Annie and you're listening to the K-records label showcase right here on BTR radio. As you may know, every once in a while we like to highlight a different independent label that is releasing some amazing music. This time of course we have K records, based in Olympia, Washington. We're gonna hear from Kimya Dawson, Some Velvet Side Walk, we've got a little Modest Mouse in there; Tender Forever; Mahjongg; the list just goes on. I wanna kick it off with some Old Time Relijun. It's on BTR."

Red, red wine... goes to my head,
Makes me forget that I
Still need you so

Red, red wine, it's up to you
All I can do, I've done
But memories won't go
No, memories won't go

I'd have thought that with time
thoughts of you would leave my head
I was wrong, now I find
just one thing makes me forget

Red, red wine....stay close to me
Don't let me be alone
It's tearing apart
My blue, blue heart

I'd have thought that with time
Thoughts of you would leave my head
I was wrong, now I find
Just one thing makes me forget

Red, red wine, stay close to me
Don't let me be alone
It's tearing apart
My blue, blue heart

whitney and dolly and gloria and marilyn

What struck me is that over the course of two, three decades and even so more or less cultural 'zones' the song was copied so exactly: no instruments were necessarily added, no choires or samples were mixed in. Is I Will Always Love You the Johnny B. Goode of the eighties?
Like how Soft Cell transformed 'Tainted Love' from Gloria Jones original on Motown recs to this glitz '80's softcore thing. (And then Marilyn Manson with the self proclaimed "metal thug" video of which i'm quite a fan)

(The final image is a bit of an anticlimax)
